Chicago (CBS)- Mayor Lori Lightfoot assists Chicago citizens and people living in neighboring states with reproductive health services on Monday if abortion could be outlawed if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe v. Wade case. The city has announced that it will spend $ 500,000 to do so.
“As long as I’m the mayor, the city of Chicago will continue to take a comprehensive approach to reproductive justice,” Wrightfoot said.
The announcement came a few days after the draft decision showing that the majority of the US Supreme Court was ready to overturn the groundbreaking 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing the right to abortion.
According to Wrightfoot, the Chicago Public Health Department has already enacted or passed a law banning abortion if the Roe v. Wade case is overturned, to Chicago citizens or people living in neighboring states. Will spend $ 500,000 to support access to reproductive health services in Chicago.
“This includes access to transportation, accommodation, care, and, if necessary, safe and legitimate access to abortion procedures,” said Wrightfoot. “Everyone, regardless of race, gender, age, income, or immigrant status, is worth access to health care, including reproductive rights and choices to determine one’s body.”
