Man shot dead on West Side, police injured in group incident

CHICAGO — A man was shot dead while driving in South Lawndale early Sunday morning.

A 25-year-old man was shot in his car around 2 a.m. as he was driving south near the 2200 block on South Sawyer Avenue, police said.

Police said the man had a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police reports, while officers were responding to the incident, they encountered a group of individuals, one of whom threw an object at the officer and hit him in the head.

An emergency call was made to more officers and the group fled the scene.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital in good condition for follow-up.

No one is currently in custody and police are investigating.
