Cairo-The European Union has joined the United States by expressing serious concern about the possibility of an ongoing military takeover in Sudan.
EU Foreign Ministry Prime Minister Josep Borrell is tracking events in Northeast African countries with “greatest concern” after reports of Sudanese troops detaining several senior government officials, including the interim Prime Minister, on Monday. Tweeted.
“The EU is calling on all stakeholders and regional partners to get the transition process back on track,” Borrell wrote. He mentioned the fragile transition from Sudanese dictatorship to democracy after the expulsion of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Earlier, US Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman of the Horn of Africa said Washington was “extremely vigilant” and said a military coup would threaten US aid to poor countries.
“As I’ve said repeatedly, forcing a change in interim government puts US support at risk,” the Bureau of African Affairs of the US State Department wrote on Twitter.
