Vaughn completes Grand Slam as White Sox beat Tigers 11-5

Detroit (AP) — Andrew Vaughan completed his first career Grand Slam as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 11-5 on Sunday.

Eloy Jimenez and AJ Pollock also connected and Chicago won their third in four games. Jimenez finished with his 3 hits and 3 RBI and Gavin Sheets with his 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Chicago right-hander Vince Velázquez said, “This trip has gone very in the right direction. We’re taking the right steps to damage Cleveland at home.”

The White Sox are trying to catch the AL Central leading Guardians, but they’re out of time. After the Guardians lost 3-0 to Minnesota, they trailed Cleveland by 3 1/2 games.

Chicago will host Cleveland in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night.

“It’s September. We’re all tired, our feet hurt, our bodies hurt,” Vaughan said. “But we have to do our best every day, no matter what you have.”

The White Sox improved to 12 wins and 4 losses against the Tigers, who were bottom of the season series. The team will play again in Chicago next weekend.

The reigning AL Central champions scored control with five runs in the fifth inning. Sheets tied with a bases-loaded walk against Drew Hutchison (2-9), while Vaughn hit a team-high 17 home runs off James Foley with a 1-2 slider to left center to go 7-2. Won.

“It was big,” White Sox acting manager Miguel Cairo said.

The White Sox (76-71) have hit 31 homers in their last 19 games. If at least he hits two home runs, they’re 27-5.

The Tigers rallied in the sixth inning. Jimmy Lambert replaced Jose Luis with the bases loaded and no outs, then brought the run home when he pitched four pitches to Kelly Carpenter.

However, Lambert retired the next three batters. Eric Haas popped out, Jaimer Candelario hit a sacrifice fly, and pinch hitter Harold Castro hit a swing.

“He’s been in the bullpen all year,” Cairo said. “He was the guy to come in and close out the inning. That was our plan.”

Chicago then scored three runs in the seventh inning. After his walk off the lead, with Jose his Abreu on board, Jiménez met Garrett Hill and took a 450-foot drive straight to center.

“I was about to go out on deck and heard what sounded like gunshots,” Vaughan said. “That was special. He can hit baseball far.”

Jimenez added an RBI double in the eighth inning. In his last 11 games, he has hit 5 homers and his 16 RBIs, and has 17 in 43 at-bats.

Willie Castro hit a two-run homer for Detroit in the first inning, and Javier Baez added a solo shot in the eighth inning. Baez is back in the lineup as the designated hitter after dealing with a swollen knee following an awkward at-bat on Friday.

Hutchison had 6 runs and 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings in front of a crowd of 14,435. He has just one win in his last 13 starts.

“There’s a fine line between pitching aggressively and giving yourself a chance to break that[five innings],” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said. and continued to build, apparently exploding.”

In his first start since June 9, Velázquez allowed two runs and three hits in four innings.

“I think it’s my fault for giving up the home run,” Velázquez said, “but once I calmed down and started to understand it, it was a nice, easy, smooth ride.” I have to.”

Tanner Banks (2-0) pitched three innings to take the win.

“It’s so great to see our bullpen,” Cairo said. “Everyone contributes, and everyone in the lineup does little things to win the ball game.”

Roster move

The White Sox have placed reliever Joe Kelly on the family’s medical leave list. Banks has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.
