Iraq, US-led coalition ends negotiations, signaling a new stage | WGN Radio 720

Iraq, Iraq (AP) —The Iraqi-US-led coalition will formally transition from a combat mission to eradicate Islamic State to an advisory mission to support Iraqi forces in the final round of technical negotiations. It has ended, Iraqi security officials announced on Thursday.

Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Alaji tweeted that negotiations centered on the transition have ended and the coalition’s combat mission has officially ended. He said the coalition would continue to provide support, advice and training to Iraqi troops.

The announcement reaffirms the July decision by the Biden administration to end US military combat missions in Iraq by 31 December. About 2,500 US troops remain in Iraq. It is unclear how many people will remain in the next stage of coalition support.

At a meeting on Thursday, the coalition said it was ready to end its combat mission before the set deadline, said Kurdish Peshumurga Brig. General Hazhar Ismail attending a meeting in Baghdad.

“They said we were ready to start today,” he said.

However, it is unlikely that the formal termination of a combat mission will change the facts of the scene. The coalition ceased to engage in combat missions in early 2020. Since then, the main US focus has been to support Iraqi troops rather than fighting for them.

Iraqi security forces are still in need of simultaneous air support to strike IS targets and gather information, Iraqi and Kurdish security officials said. They also need assistance in maintaining the weapons and equipment provided by the United States.

Iraq recently witnessed an increase in IS attacks across the conflicting Northern Territory, which has long served as a hotbed for terrorist activity.

The intention to shift from the US combat role to a role focused on Iraqi security forces training and advice was that in April a joint statement by the US and Iraq announced the withdrawal of the remaining US combat forces from Iraq. A timetable determined after it was announced when it said it was possible.

For years, the US military has played a supporting role in Iraq and neighboring Syria. This is the origin of a group of Islamic State that crossed the border and occupied a large area of Iraq’s territory in 2014, urging the United States to send troops back to Iraq. Year.
