After voting ends on Tuesday, voters in the Lake, McHenry, Kane, Kendal, and DeKalb counties will be one step closer to choosing the next Illinois Supreme Court judge. Four Republicans and three Democrats sought a party nomination in a seat in the State Supreme Court.
The winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries confront in November at a seat in the second jurisdiction previously held by Bob Thomas, a former Republican judge at the Chicago Bears who had been in the State Supreme Court for nearly 20 years. To do.
District 2 has consistently elected Republican candidates since the 1960s, but the Democratic-controlled Illinois Legislature has recently rewritten the election map. Voters from the northwestern part of the state have been moved from District 2 to the vast District 4, which now extends from Jo Daviess County to Jersey County, just north of St. Louis.
The Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, and Kendal counties remained in District 2, and DuPage County was moved to District 3.
The Republican primary was a four-way competition between an appellate judge, two circuit judges, and a former Lake County Sheriff.
District 2 Appeal Judge Susan Hutchinson and Lake County Circuit Judge Daniel Shanes were awarded a “highly recommended” rating by the Illinois State Bar Association. John Novellini, a circuit court judge in Kane County, and Mark Karan, a former Lake County Sheriff, were rated “not recommended.” Noverini was automatically evaluated after refusing to participate in the bar group’s evaluation.
Citadel CEO Ken Griffin donated $ 6.25 million this year to the Citizens for Judicial Fairness, a conservative independent spending committee that has spent more than $ 170,000 on television advertising to support Shanes. The group spent about $ 50,000 to oppose Karan’s bid for the party’s nomination. Lake County’s third sheriff was unsuccessful against Democratic US Senator Dick Durbin in 2020, winning nearly 40% of state-wide votes.
Of the three candidates for the Democratic primary, only Elizabeth “Liz” Rockford, Deputy Judge of Lake County, was rated “strongly recommended” by the Illinois State Bar Association. The group rated Kane County Circuit Judge Rene Cruz as “recommended” and Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering as “deprecated.”
Both Rochford and Rotelling are associated with strong Democrats in the state. Former Illinois Chairman Michael Madigan’s allies helped Rotaring collect petitions in the event of a failed 2018 bid for the Illinois Attorney General, and Rochford has long donated funds to Chicago Aldo. I did. Edward Burke, currently indicted by the Commonwealth. Rochford’s campaign committee has far funded democratic rivals.
There were almost three fewer candidates for the race. Rotoring, Hutchinson, and Callan were temporarily launched from ballots on a snuff containing the number of signatures needed to run in the newly redrawn district. A judge at the Cook County Circuit Court revived all three candidates last month.
Judges of the Illinois Supreme Court often, but not always, have bench experience before appealing to the State Supreme Court. Each of the current seven members of the court served at the level of the Circuit Court or the Court of Appeals.
In the state’s third jurisdiction, Michael J. Burke and Mary Kay O’Brien faced primary elections, respectively. O’Brien, a Democratic candidate, was a judge in the District 3 Appeal Court, and when he was appointed to the Appeal Court from 1996 to 2003, he was a member of the Illinois State Representative.
Republican candidate Burke is sitting in the Illinois Supreme Court after the Illinois Supreme Court has appointed him to fill the vacant second district seat left by Thomas. However, as the legislature’s reorganization shifted his home seat, he is currently running to fill the vacant seats in District 3, created by former Judge Thomas Kilbride’s 2020 failed holding bid. ..
In 2020, the Citizens for Judicial Fairness spent millions of dollars leaving Kilbride as he asked for the 60% “yes” vote needed to keep Kilbride sitting on the bench. The group tied him at a disadvantage to Madigan.court Appoints Robert L. CarterFrom Ottawa, to fill the Kilbride seat in 2020, but Carter said at the time he wouldn’t run for this election.
If the Republicans win both Supreme Court races in November, the courts will win the Republican majority for the first time in decades.
