Illinois has acquired over $ 1 billion from a federal infrastructure program to repair a 2K collapsing bridge

Chicago (WLS)-The Federal Infrastructure Program will send over $ 1 billion to Illinois over the next five years. It is assigned to over 2,000 dilapidated and collapsing bridges that need repair.

In terms of the number of bridges rated as structurally flawed, Illinois ranks third in the country according to the National Bridge Registry. 2,374 are in poor condition throughout the state and more than half of them need to be replaced.

The Clarendon Hills Road Bridge, which straddles the I-55, is one of them.

“Renewing the bridge means a safer community for working at school, a sidewalk with access to pedestrians and bicycles across the river, and it means improving traffic.” Rep. Brad Schneider (D-10) said.

On Friday, members of the Illinois Parliamentary delegation gathered at the Landlord Bridge over the Des Plaines River to market money for infrastructure. This year, the state will receive $ 275 million. Over the next five years, Illinois will earn $ 1.4 billion.

The Land Road Bridge was built in 1928 and will be replaced in 2022.

“This is a transformative bill that has been postponed for a really long time for what we needed to do in this country,” said Jan Schakowsky, Congressman D-9. I did.

Already this year, about 170 bridges are scheduled to be repaired by the Illinois Department of Transportation. With additional federal funding, more bridges can be added to the list.

Politicians will certainly make jokes about raising money for their own committee, but IDOT is responsible for deciding where the money will be spent.

Steve Travia, IDOT’s Chief Engineer, said:

The federal dollar, which does not require the community to come up with partially matched funds, so Illinois taxpayers will not be hit extra to get the project done.

IDOT also emphasized that the condition of the bridge may be considered poor, but that does not mean that the bridge is unsafe. You may need more than regular maintenance.
