Illinois Democrats Ban Assault-Style Weapon Sales Next Year

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (WTVO) – Democrats in Springfield hope to pass Illinois’ major gun control bill early next year, which will immediately ban the sale of assault-style weapons.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the bill would raise the age at which residents can buy guns to 21.

The proposal has been underway in Congress since the July 4 Highland Park massacre, in which seven people were killed and 48 injured when gunmen opened fire.

The law also prohibits the sale of ammunition magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.

Lawmakers hope to hold public hearings this month before voting on the bill in January’s lame duck session.

Last year, during lame duck sessions in January, lawmakers passed the controversial SAFE-T law that would end cash bail in Illinois.
