Types of felony crimes and their penalties in Illinois

A felony is an offense punishable by more than one year in prison in Illinois. Depending on the type of felony, you may be sentenced to prison time or probation. In most cases, felonies are crimes that involve violence and/or the use of a weapon. As such, they require mandatory minimum sentencing requirements. There are many different felonies that people can be charged with within Illinois. This article will explain how each type of felony affects you and your life in Illinois.

There are five types of felonies in Illinois: class x felony, class 1 felony, class 2 felony, class 3 felony, and class 4 felony.

Class X Felony

The most severe crimes in the state of Illinois are class x felonies. These types of felonies require mandatory sentencing requirements. In addition to having the fewest options for an early release, these crimes will involve you spending far longer in prison than an ordinary felony would.

Some common crimes in this category are terrorism, armed robbery, treason, etc.

The penalty can be between 6 to 30 years in State Penitentiary and/or a fine of up to 25,000 USD.

Class 1 Felony

Class 1 felonies are similar and require mandatory punishments but not so extreme as class X felons. It includes ongoing penalties such as fines and probation rather than significant jail time or parole dates for which one can be released after serving an amount of time that equates to 180 days or three years.

Common crimes in this category are second degree murders, vehicular invasion, residential burglary, etc.

The penalty can be between 4 to 15 years in State Penitentiary and/or a fine of up to 25,000 USD.

Class 2 Felony

Class 2 felonies require mandatory prison sentences, and most must be served at a medium-security facility such as Joliet correctional center. However, not all such prisons offer this type of structure for people with these more extended penalties who do not have significant criminal histories before getting caught up in numerous crimes while behind bars.

Common crimes in this category are arson, bid rotating, abuse of a corpse, etc.

The penalty can be between 3 to 7 years in State Penitentiary and/or a fine of up to 25,000 USD.

Class 3 Felony

Class 3 felonies require penalties that are not as intense as class 2 but still must be served at medium-security state prisons. If it is their first conviction, then they may get incarceration centers. These crimes have to be observed because of an element called aggravating circumstances.

Common crimes in this category are syndicated gambling, aggravated stalking, tampering with public records, etc.

The penalty can be between 2 to 5 years in State Penitentiary and/or a fine of up to 25,000 USD.

Class 4 Felony

Class 4 felony Illinoisis the lowest felony-level offense. These crimes are minor in scope and charged whenever the severity of a crime is not high enough to go into classes 1 or 2 but still requires custodial sentences. These are usually crimes created by crime on the rise as they conform to public perception in society regarding what is a severe offense.

Common crimes in this category are computer fraud, false fire alarms, cyberstalking, etc.

The penalty can be between 1 to 3 years in State Penitentiary and/or a fine of up to 25,000 USD.

Finally, apart from the regular prison time and fine, they may face lifelong difficulties because of a criminal conviction. They will be ineligible for many government benefits, job ineligibility, housing discrimination, and so on.
