All athletes dream of advancing to the NBA, but few athletes have been able to reach this elite championship, especially from abroad. That said, I decided to highlight some of Bulgaria’s most popular basketball players who had the opportunity to play in the NBA.

Cedric Simmons

His name doesn’t sound Bulgarian, and it has to do with the fact that Simmons is actually an American-born Bulgarian professional basketball player currently playing at Olympiacos BC.

Simmons was selected for the 15th pickback of the 2006 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets. He then moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was able to sign a one-year contract with the Hornets. He was then traded to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team trade, but not long after he went to Sacramento Kings.

Georgy Glutikov

Here’s another Bulgarian NBA legend that is currently retired. Georgy was born on January 10, 1960 and was able to achieve a very successful career in the NBA League. The 6’8 inch forward was the first athlete from the eastern nations and had the chance to compete in the American Basketball Association.

His career began playing at BC Balkan Botevgrad, and a few years later he became Europe’s most successful basketball player, averaging 23 points and 19 rebounds per game. This caught the attention of Phoenix Suns, who chose him in the seventh round of the 1985 NBA Draft.

After spending a year in the NBA, his career began to decline as he began to gain weight and his productivity dropped significantly.

Priest Lauderdale

Like Simmons, Lauderdale is a retired American and Bulgarian basketball giant weighing 325 pounds and weighing 7 feet 4 inches. His professional basketball career began in the Atlanta Hawks when he was selected in the 1996 NBA Draft.

His NBA career was short-lived after moving to the Denver Nuggets in the 97-98 season, but with little success. After that, he decided to go to Bulgaria for three years, where he became a Bulgarian citizen.

Alexander Vezenkov

Alexander, also known as “Alex”, is a professional basketball player born in Cyprus, but was granted citizenship for the descendants of Bulgaria and represented the Bulgarian national team.

His professional basketball career began playing for Alice in the Greek League after being named the Best Young Player in the Greek League in 2014. A year later, he was able to win the league’s MVP, Best Young Player, and Best Player Award.

It caught the attention of FC Barcelona and signed a four-year contract of over $ 2 million. He was then named the 57th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by Brooklyn Nets, and this year the Cleveland Cavaliers got the draft rights from Nets.

The last word

These are some of the most successful Bulgarian basketball players who have successfully played in the big NBA league. Bulgaria is a country where basketball is not a major sport and explains why so few players come from the region. That said, they are working to build a stronger basketball community and are undoubtedly hoping for more NBA players from Bulgaria in the future.
