Paris, June 10 (Xinhua)-The European Union needs to build a framework for strategic autonomy on economic, industrial and technological issues and military values, French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday.
“For me, the center of the future will be European sovereignty,” Macron said at a press conference in Elysee on the eve of the G7 Summit in the United Kingdom from June 11th to 13th.
Macron called for a new partnership with the United States, citing Europe’s “firm record” in recent years on this, including defense, digital governance, and the development of post-pandemic reconstruction plans.
Macron, who said the Transatlantic Alliance was experiencing “brain death” in 2019 at the NATO Summit in Brussels next week, emphasized that “we should recognize the autonomy of Europeans’ strategic capabilities.”
“NATO must clarify its common values. NATO must establish rules of conduct among allies, and NATO must clarify its concept,” Macron said.
“What seems very important in this context is that we Europeans assume that we are the players who arm our soil.
“Europe is not just an object or territory of distribution of influence. We are the subject of international geopolitics and we must assume that,” he added.
