Washington (AP) — US regulators expect to decide Wednesday to approve booster doses of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines, Food and Drug Administration officials said at a government meeting. ..
FDA’s Doran Fink has previewed “Several Announcements Late Today”. This was expected to include mixing and matching COVID-19 booster doses among the three US manufacturers Pfizer, Modana and J & J. Fink attended a meeting of vaccine experts convened by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are expected to make an FDA decision on Thursday and make their own recommendations.
Millions of Americans have already been given a third dose to boost Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.
Last week, the FDA’s Independent Expert Committee unanimously recommended expanding the booster campaign to include recipients of the double-dose Moderna vaccine and the J & J single-dose vaccine. Most experts also agreed that using another booster brand appears to be safe and effective for enhanced protection. The FDA, as is generally the case, does not have to follow the group’s advice.
“Since last Friday, the FDA has been very busy closing our review and working towards approval of the vaccine application,” said Fink, deputy director of the FDA’s vaccine division.
Booster recommendations will not be official until the CDC director confirms who gets them and when.
