I talked to a local doctor to resolve this falsity online. Ethylene oxide is a gas commonly used to sterilize medical devices. WAlthough listed as a carcinogen by federal agencies, only small amounts of harmless amounts have been used to sterilize test kits.
“Large exposures are certainly carcinogens,” said Dr. Ted Clark, chief medical officer at Decatur Memorial Hospital. There is no risk of cancer in the nasal swab. “
It is also included in the sterilization of spices and cosmetics. Dr. Clark recommends that everyone be tested if they have symptoms or are exposed to an infected person.
