Over 130 arrested in California for allegedly buying alcohol for minors
(KTLA) – More than 130 people were subpoenaed in California on Saturday for allegedly buying alcohol for minors.
In collaboration with the California Bureau of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), a “shoulder tap” operation involving 44 local law enforcement agencies was conducted statewide.
During operations, minors under law enforcement supervision stand outside liquor stores and convenience stores asking customers to purchase alcohol.
Minors indicate they are underage and may not purchase alcohol.
“If an adult agrees to purchase alcohol for a minor, they can be arrested and prosecuted for providing alcohol to a minor,” officials said.

Officials said more than 130 people were caught on suspicion of serving alcoholic beverages to minors in this manner. At least nine others have been cited for him, including opening containers, public drunkenness, driving under the influence, and other crimes.
“We are undertaking these activities in an effort to keep alcohol out of the hands of young people,” said ABC Director Eric Hirata. It puts the spotlight on prevention, increases public safety in our communities, and helps reduce DUI.”
Penalties for serving alcohol to minors are a minimum fine of $1,000 and 24 hours of community service, officials said.
Statistics show that young people under the age of 21 are at a much higher risk of being involved in an accident than older drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 25% of fatal crashes involving drivers under the age of 21 involve alcohol consumption.
