Tokyo (AP) — The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games fired the director of the opening ceremony on Thursday after making a Holocaust joke at the 1998 comedy show.

Seiko Hashimoto, chairman of the Organizing Committee, said that Kentaro Kobayashi was dismissed the day before the opening ceremony. He was accused of using jokes about the Holocaust in comedy acts, including the phrase “Play the Holocaust.”

“I found out that Mr. Kobayashi used words to mock historical tragedy in his acting,” said Mr. Hashimoto. “We deeply apologize for causing such a development the day before the opening ceremony and causing inconvenience to many people concerned and people all over the country including Tokyo.”

Tokyo has been plagued by scandals since the 2013 Olympics were awarded. French investigators are investigating alleged bribes paid to members of the International Olympic Committee to influence the vote in Tokyo. Fallout was forced to resign from IOC member Tsunekazu Takeda, who led the Japanese Olympic Committee two years ago.

The opening ceremony of the game with a delayed pandemic is scheduled for Friday. The ceremony will be held without an audience as a measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, but will be attended by some stakeholders, guests and the media.

Kobayashi is a former member of the popular Owarai Combi Rahmens and is known abroad for his comedy series, which includes “Japanese traditions.”

Japan is promoting the Olympics against the advice of most medical professionals. This is partly due to pressure from the IOC, and it is estimated that if the game were not held, it would face a loss of $ 3-4 billion in television rights revenue.

The official cost of the Olympics is $ 15.4 billion, but more than that, according to government audits. All but $ 6.7 billion are publicly funded.

Mr. Hashimoto said, “Last year I was preparing to send a positive message. There are many incidents that give a negative image toward Tokyo 2020 toward the end.”

Toshiro Muto, CEO of the Tokyo Organizing Committee, also acknowledged the decline in reputation.

“Maybe these negative incidents will affect the positive message we wanted to convey to the world,” he said.

A last-minute scandal will occur as Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s government faces criticism that it will prioritize the Olympics despite public health concerns in the recurrence of the coronavirus infection.

Koichi Nakano, a politician at Sophia University, wrote on Twitter that the turmoil at the opening ceremony emphasized the lack of awareness of diversity in Japan.

Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, said she learned of Yuriko Koike’s comments from Mr. Hashimoto.

“I was surprised,” she said.
