Joni Mitchell Wins Gershwin Award for Popular Song WGN Radio 720

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just over a year after being celebrated at the Kennedy Center, Joni Mitchell returns to Washington to receive another lifetime achievement honor, the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Award for Popular Song.

The 79-year-old Mitchell is widely regarded as one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her time, with best-known productions such as “Chelsea Morning,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” and “Freeman in Paris.”

“Joni Mitchell’s music and artistry have left a unique impression on American culture and internationally, standing apart from folk music with a distinctive voice and songs that have been around for years. “Joni Mitchell’s music has left so many artists and music lovers behind her,” US Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a statement released Thursday. Mitchell, who lives in Los Angeles, will be honored on March 1 at a tribute concert airing March 31 on PBS. Previous Gershwin Award winners include Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Carole King.

“This is a very prestigious award,” Mitchell said in a statement. “Thank you for respecting me.”

Mitchell was also named MusiCares Person of the Year before last year’s Grammy Awards. After being away for nearly 20 years, she returned to the stage in August and is set to perform again in June of this year.
