Chicago’s 900 North Michigan Shop on the Magnificent Mile fills vacant seats in front of the store and attracts shoppers.

Chicago (WLS)-While shoppers are preparing for the holiday season, I-Team updates an empty storefront survey to see how stores are filled in Chicago’s world-famous downtown area. I’m investigating.

Currently, one shopping center says it has almost returned to capacity.

Many empty storefronts continue to struggle, so they invited an internal I-Team to show how they did it.

“My brand is about experience. It’s an experiential brand, sensation, smell. You have to pick it up and sniff it,” said a local business owner who opened a candle and fragrance storefront at the 900 North Michigan shop. Reggie Hathorn explained. During the pandemic just a few months ago.

The 900 North Shopping Mall is full while other retail spaces are struggling.

“I think it has a sense of community. They have a good business here. [and] The quality of shoppers is high, “said Stacey Corios, a spokesman for 900 North.

She added that their store has a 98% occupancy.

In November, Team I discovered a significant surge in vacancy rates. Many of them happened during a pandemic where storefronts fled downtown Chicago’s shopping district.

The Magnificent Mile vacancy rate is over 19%, up from about 11% in 2019.
So why did the company come here?

“Honestly, we worked with them. We understand where they are as a business and we see opportunities for growth. We work with them on the leasing and opening sides. “I am,” said Corios.

During the pandemic, they have worked with businesses on rent. We have also recently introduced five new stores, working with existing stores to provide opportunities for expansion.

The Bloomingdale’s Home Store literally expanded its footprint to the floor space of the former mall. Then they added food.

“A 20,000-square-foot food hall-Aster Hall-has been added,” Corios said.

She added that cocktails are now available while shopping and that there are recent mods and in-house stylists. There are various concepts, such as virtual golf in top golf. Everything helps shoppers keep spending directly.

The 900 shop strategy of bringing more experience is also being used to try to fill many of the vacant seats on Michigan Avenue. Many of them, according to the Chicago Chamber of Commerce, happened before the pandemic of online shopping.
