ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Another strong quake followed after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southeastern Turkey early Monday morning. Reports say it was felt in several provinces in the region, causing many buildings to collapse.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake is about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from the main city and state capital of Gaziantep. It was located about 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the town of Nurdagi.

Its center was 18 kilometers (11 miles) deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About 10 minutes later a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 rang out.

Turkey’s disaster emergency management agency, AFAD, said the 7.4 earthquake was centered around the town of Pazarchik in Kahramanmaras province.

Several buildings collapsed in Malatya, Diyarbakir and neighboring provinces of Malatya, HaberTurk TV reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Turkey lies on a major fault line and is frequently shaken by earthquakes.

The quake was also felt in Lebanon and Syria.

Syrian state media reported that several buildings had collapsed in the northern city of Aleppo and the central city of Hama.

Several buildings have collapsed in Syria’s rebel-controlled northwest, which borders Turkey, according to the opposition Syrian Civil Defense Service.

There was no immediate word on casualties.
