A razor blade is attached to the handle of a gasoline pump in North Carolina

Forest City, North Carolina (WSPA) — Police are warning the public after a razor blade was found in a gas pump handle in Forest City, North Carolina and surrounding areas.

The Forest City Police Department said it found multiple instances of razor blades attached to gas pump handles.

Lieutenant Brandon Rothrock said the blades were discovered during an inspection of the pump by the USDA.

“[The inspector] made us aware. …he said he was looking for some yesterday and found some at Loko Station in Ellenboro,” Rothrock said. “So he came to check some of our local stations and found one at Junction 74.”

It also happened at another gas station in Forest City.

“There is no explanation as to why anyone would do this,” he said.

He said all known blades have been removed.

“If you’re gassing, check it out. Look before you grab it. Defend yourself if necessary,” Rothrock said. “It will take hours to review the video to see if we can identify any suspects.”

Customer Dan O’Brien is familiar with the 74 Junction gas station.

“This particular gas station is only two minutes from here, so I’m here almost every morning,” says O’Bryan.

He said he would now double check before picking up the pump.

“I’m not surprised, but it’s definitely a good thing. I’ll tell my wife about it,” said O’Brien.

Rothrock said there were no injuries, but it was unclear how long the blade had been there or who was responsible.

“In these times, there are germs and stuff anyway, and you might wear gloves. Until we have a solid answer,” he said.

These incidents are under investigation by the USDA. Meanwhile, police are asking people to be aware of their surroundings while pumping gas.
