Bronze statue of Martin Luther King Jr. falls across from Capitol

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — The Martin Luther King Jr. statue across from the Capitol “tumbled down” Sunday night, according to the Office of the Secretary of State.

The statue was on the corner of Second Street and Capitol Avenue. It showed Martin Luther King Jr. stepping into the Capitol.

The Office of the Secretary of State said 24-year-old Fernando Garcia Martinez was arrested and charged with criminal damage to state property. He is currently being held in Sangamon County Jail and has a bail hearing on Tuesday.

The statue, which was knocked completely off its pedestal around 11 p.m. Sunday night, was taken to the Secretary of State’s warehouse. Experts are assessing how much damage was done to the statue and how much it will cost to restore.

There is a video of the incident, but it has not been released because it was used by the prosecution.
