COBDEN — Karl Switzer finally gets the chance.

Originally from Cobbden (2003 class), he was recently hired to take over the role of head coach of the Apple Knockers Varsity Boys Basketball Program on behalf of retired Wendell Wheeler.

Sweitzer has been an assistant to head coach Mike Chamness at Anna-Jonesboro for the past 11 years.

Over the four years in Cobden, Wheeler has accumulated 90-25 records and has collected two South Egyptian Championships, along with the first 2020 Regional Championships since 1964.

Wheeler said he would spend his free time following his son Connor, an assistant coach for the SIU men’s basketball team. He and his wife, Kim, will also visit North Carolina to visit his recently married daughter, Macy.

Wheeler taught 24 years of Varsity Basketball, including stints in police cars, Newton and Ducoin, before finishing in Cobbden. He was inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Coach Association Hall of Fame this spring.

Sweitzer will take over a highly talented team. To return to the fold: All-South performer Tyler Franklin, 6’5 senior post player. Senior Drake Campbell, 6-5 also stands. 6-2 Senior Point Guard Brady Vandoren. The trio will serve as a component of what should be a candidate for the league this fall.

“I had a great time at Anna Jonesboro, which is very special to me,” Switzer said of the opportunity to coach at his alma mater. “We want to stay true to what has been established here. Great players are coming back and a strong group of freshmen is coming out. We are excited about the future of this program.”

Switzer said he was a more “grind it out” half-court offense-type coach and a stickler for playing hard-nose defenses.

“I think you can call me a disciplinary,” Switzer said. “But if you have the opportunity to run, do it. You need to adapt to the type of player you have. Overall, I’m the way coach Chamnes ran his program at AJ. I liked them. Their parents. He was very professional. I want to do the same. “
