Recovering photos from a camera lost in the Colorado River for 13 years

Denver (KDVR) — A digital camera thought to be lost forever has resurfaced in a Colorado river after 13 years.

Coral Amai lost his camera while tubing on the Animas River in 2010, shortly after his best friend’s wedding.

“I was thrown out of the tube with Smelter Rapid,” she said. “And then I came back and got my tube, but no camera.”

Amai was heartbroken to learn that many of the photos on her camera had not been uploaded to her computer.

“I remember going back to my boyfriend’s house and crying uncontrollably and being upset,” she said.

Deep water and fast currents quickly accepted defeat, knowing that she would never look at the camera again.

That is, until this week when anglers found something strange sticking out of the ground in shallow water.

“I was walking and saw it sticking out of the sand,” said Spencer Greiner. I was going to throw it away, but curiosity got the better of me and I had to see what was inside.”

Greiner used a screwdriver to pry open the memory card door, and water spewed out of it.

“I was like, ‘Oh, this probably won’t work at all,'” Greiner said. “But I plugged it into my computer, read it right away, and thought, ‘Okay, let’s see what treasures we can find on this memory card.'”

Greiner quickly found pictures of tubing trips, bachelorette parties, and weddings and knew he had to find an owner.

So he turned to Durango’s Facebook group, posted some pictures and asked: Did you get married in the Durango area on June 12, 2010? Did you have an ugly brown stretch station wagon at your bachelorette party? Do you know any of these people? If so please contact me.

Within an hour, Greiner said, people started recognizing themselves in the photos.

“Less than an hour after I posted, the groom at the wedding said, ‘Me and my wife!'” Greiner said. “So I was shocked that it happened so quickly.”

The couple quickly track down Amai, who was at a work meeting, and tell her the good news.

“I was completely dumbfounded,” Amai said. “And I got up and was like dancing in the bathroom. I need to tell this to someone like now.”

Greiner plans to send all the photos to Amayi this week.

He believes the camera traveled 1.2 miles from where it was lost to where it was found downstream.

“I thought it was really amazing that it was submerged in the river for 13 years,” he said.

“I’m just amazed that the SD card worked all the time,” Amayi said.
