Bags of Hope supports thousands of Chicago homeless people with kind words, hot meals, toiletry bags and gifts.

Chicago (WLS)-Nearly 60,000 people in Chicago do not have a home. They live in the streets, heat, rain, and cold near your favorite stores. The need for assistance is even greater as the pandemic thins the support system.

A family in Chicago responds to calls for help with kind words and hot meals.

A good meal can be very helpful. You need the right ingredients, including those you can’t find in a grocery store.

Attila Cseh and his family have founded and run the non-profit Bags of Hope Chicago. They drive around the city every week, serving hot home-cooked meals to homeless people. These meals come with bags full of toiletries and merchandise.

Good deeds are facilitated by his own personal experience. Cseh said he and his family knew what it would be like to be homeless.

“I live with three kids, work $ 120,000 a year and enjoy life. Now you have nothing, nothing,” he said. “I’m in ICU. You sit there, what am I going to do? How do you do this?”

Cseh was diagnosed with heart disease in 2016. He spent more than 400 days in the hospital. Medical expenses have piled up and money has begun to run out.

“When I passed through it, my heart suddenly broke and the wall collapsed,” he recalled.

Through the pain, support from the community has emerged. People began donating private homes for family use while Cseh was being treated. Then the idea of paying it in advance was born. His son, Daniel, began distributing food to people in need outside his father’s hospital.

“I felt like I needed to help someone, and those people seemed to need it, just as they needed help,” Daniel said.

And the Bags of Hope was born.

Cseh said Chicago’s homeless population has increased by at least 34% since the start of the pandemic. Bags of Hope is currently cooking at home and will soon move to a larger space. They are also looking for volunteers. If you want to volunteer, support, or donate Visit bagofhopechicago.org
