LeBron James is becoming a co-owner of the Boston Red Sox.
Those who know the situation said Tuesday that James, a Los Angeles Lakers star, and his longtime business partner Maverick Carter are partners in the Fenway Sports Group. The person who did not disclose the magnitude of the investment by James or Carter spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as none of the people involved had publicly announced the move.
The Boston Globe first reported the news, and the New York Times and ESPN also reported that James and Carter were becoming partners.
Fenway Sports Group is the parent company of the Red Sox and is the Liverpool Football Club and Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR team in the English Premier League.
Fenway Sports Group Chairman Tom Werner did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment from the Associated Press. A Red Sox and FSG spokeswoman declined to comment.
This is, in a sense, the most unusual relationship. James has long professed to be a fan of the New York Yankees, but in recent years has also shown loyalty to the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
And now he’s linked to the Yankees’ biggest rival, the Red Sox.
James has been associated with FSG since 2011, when he signed a marketing deal in exchange for a small ownership of Liverpool.
JB Bicker staff, coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, said James’ ability to join the group was a big step, especially given the example of business diversity.
“I think his prediction that he could be in a position to change the wealth of generations, especially when he was seen, was amazing,” said Bickerstaff. “And you see not only what he did for himself, but what it allows him to do for others. It’s exciting and exciting. Others are amazing. “
This move only strengthens James’ business empire. The four-time NBA champions with Miami, Cleveland and the Lakers are believed to have the NBA’s top recommended portfolio. He also has media company Uninterrupted and production company Spring Hill Entertainment.
“You knew he had a great eye and passion for business,” said Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “And he doesn’t set boundaries where he can take it. He’s a big fan of the Yankees, so I think it’s fun.”
James has often talked about his off-court role in society in recent years, and how he evaluates that part of his life as much as he is still one of the basketball elite players. ..
“I still know what I’m doing on the floor. Obviously, I’m devoting everything to the game,” James told AP in December. “But I can now have a bigger impact off the floor than on the floor, and I want to keep inspiring people in the way basketball games are played. But people. There’s much more I can do off the floor to help grow, inspire people, connect people, and empower them. “
