Woman buys her first home and wins $1 million a week after gas station scratch-off

Greensboro, North Carolina (WGHP) – Patricia Simmons of Greensboro, N.C., a week after closing her home for the first time, bought a scratch ticket that won her $1 million, according to a news release from the NC Education Lottery.

“I just stared,” Simmons said. “It was unreal to see it.”

Simmons, a home support worker, said when she first owned a home she was initially worried about her monthly mortgage payments. Now her win is helping pay for her new home.

She bought her $30 Millionaire Maker winning ticket at Fairway One Stop on Eugene Street, South Elm, Greensboro.

“Since then I have been in shock,” she said. “I’m just paralyzed.”

Simmons said her husband didn’t believe her when she called to tell him the news.

“He said, ‘Tricia, you’re playing,'” she said. “He wanted to see the ticket.”

When Simmons arrived at lottery headquarters on Monday, she was faced with a decision. She had the choice of receiving her prize money over her 20 years as her $50,000 annuity, or as a lump sum she would receive $600,000.

She chose a single payment of $600,000. After withholding the requisite state and federal taxes, she took her $427,509 home.
