At least 20 shots, 1 dead, on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Rose Lane in Willowbrook Shooting: Tri-State Fire District

Willowbrook, IL (WLS) — At least 20 people were shot in the southwestern suburb of Willowbrook in the early hours of Sunday, one of them dead, fire officials said.

The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Rose Lane, said Joe Ostrander, battalion commander of the Tri-State Fire Protection District. Witnesses said a large group gathered in a strip mall parking lot for the Juneteenth celebration and turned into a mob.

At least 10 people were shot, fire officials said.

DuPage County Sheriff’s Department officials said late Sunday morning that 20 people had been shot and one died.

“It was supposed to be something of a Juneteenth celebration. I just started hearing gunshots, so I got off until they stopped. They just kept going. After that, we literally dispersed.” eyewitness Marketia Avery said.

Two of those shot were in critical condition, while others suffered what firefighters called “bruises.”

Another eyewitness said: “Everyone was outside and then I woke up and there was gunshots going on. Everyone ran away and it was chaos.”

Victims were taken to hospitals in DuPage, Cook, and Will counties.

“I saw the police stationed like that at every entrance. I just got back home. rice field.

A large police force has been investigating the scene since around 9:00 a.m., and it was confirmed that debris still covered the ground after the incident.

“I just heard a gunshot. It was one shot at first, then a lot of gunshots. Then we said ‘yo’ and started running. I looked at my friend. , and left running like crazy,” said witness Zavier Sheikh.
