On Wednesday, Chicago air quality was ‘very unhealthy’ for the second day in a row

Chicago’s air was “very unhealthy” for the second day in a row on Wednesday as smoke from wildfires in Canada hit.

People, especially the young, the elderly and the medically vulnerable, were urged to take precautions to protect themselves.

Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District kept summer school and camp attendees indoors, and officials encouraged public transportation and carpooling to minimize additional air pollution.

“Chicagoians must stay vigilant,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said Wednesday, encouraging people to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and limit driving.

People with respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are being asked to avoid going outdoors.

“Prolonged exposure to inhaled irritants can exacerbate lung inflammation,” said Dr. Michelle Prickett, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at Northwestern Medicine. “This could lead to even more emergency department visits.

Through outreach teams and agencies, city officials are providing personal protective equipment to vulnerable residents, encouraging city employees to work remotely, and monitoring 911 calls and hospital visits.

Prickett said there was a 10% increase in patients calling pulmonary clinics with questions or concerns about poor air quality in the past two days.

The National Weather Service claimed the bad air was due to smoke-blowing winds from Canada to Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and parts of northern Indiana.

Air quality is expected to improve as the week progresses, with air quality expected to continue to deteriorate on Thursday.

Residents without access to a ventilated and safe indoor environment can visit public libraries, senior centers, park district facilities and cultural centers for rest, the mayor’s office said. His six community centers in the city are also open from 9am to 5pm. You can check the location at: city website.
