“It was hard to hear the students weeping as they shared their experiences,” said Steve Vidal, a teacher at Benito Juarez High School. I want the new owner to leave the apartment soon. So I had to hurry away from the apartment. “
Vidal contacted The Resurrection Project on Thursday to celebrate the milestone of Casa Durango, Pilsen’s new affordable home.
Raul Raymundo, CEO and co-founder of The Resurrection Project, said:
Casa Durango’s 53-unit, affordable rental housing project spans two properties near 19th Avenue and Racine Avenue and 21st Avenue and Ashland Avenue.
“Creating rooms and affordable prices for families must be a mission that we all are working on,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Wrightfoot.
Financing involves governments of all levels. The construction project is funded by a 9% low-income housing tax credit allocation from the City of Chicago and an investment from the National Capital Fund.
“This is a true example of a public-private, non-profit, public sector partnership that truly delivers and benefits at the local level,” said Matt Reilein, CEO of the National Equity Fund.
The apartment is for households with a family of four and an annual income of $ 28,000 to $ 56,000. The new modern unit will be a 2-3 bedroom apartment, providing the rooms needed by the family, as the mayor said. It also provides a place to live for people with disabilities.
The Chicago Housing Authority and the state also offer 14 units of vouchers.
“Development doesn’t have to mean movement,” Lightfoot said. “As the wealth of the community grows, long-term residents actually become beneficiaries … because they can stay in the community with affordable housing.”
Casa Durango is the latest breakthrough product. The Revival project is another ongoing effort at the Back of the Yard, where modular homes are being built. The first one is from 26-year-old David Mata.
“There are programs like TRP and what are they doing now? If you really want to own a home, in a middle-class family. That’s possible,” Mata said.
TRP wants to turn dozens of vacant lots on the South and West Sides into modular homes. Therefore, whether you are looking for affordable housing or rental units, they are built in Chicago.
The milestone coincided with Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022.
