Over 80 fact-checking organizations have called on YouTube to address what they say is false information that is rampant on the platform.

In a letter to CEO Susan Wojcski issued Wednesday, the group states that Google-owned video platforms are “one of the major routes of online disinformation and false alarms around the world.”

They say YouTube’s efforts to address the issue have proven to be inadequate.

“What we haven’t seen is a great deal of effort by YouTube to implement a policy that addresses the issue,” the letter said. “On the contrary, YouTube allows malicious actors to manipulate and abuse others and use the platform as a weapon to organize and raise money.”

According to these groups, this issue is particularly prevalent in non-English speaking countries and the Global North and Global South.

Fact Checkers are all members of the International Fact Checking Network, including Rappler in the Philippines, Africa Check, Science Feedback in France, and dozens of other groups. They blamed YouTube and said they saw the disinformation debate as a “false dichotomy” of removing or not removing content.

Displaying fact-checked information is more effective than deleting content, the fact checker writes.

They suggest that YouTube focuses on providing “clearly layered” context and debanking for videos. They also called on YouTube to act against repetitive criminals and step up their efforts against false information in languages ​​other than English.

In a statement, YouTube spokesman Elena Hernandez said, “With the policies of all the countries we operate to connect people to authoritative content, reduce the spread of false information on the borders, and remove violating videos. We have invested heavily in our products. ”
