A South Side Couple Keeping Latin Music Traditions

CHICAGO — For decades, a remarkable South Side couple has danced to bring people together while upholding Latin American musical traditions.

Mambo legend Saladeen Aramin and his wife of 42 years, Rosita Ragin Aramin, helped produce the Chicago International Salsa Congress.

Performers from around the world converge at The Westin O’Hare in Rosemont from February 16-19.

Aramin, 81, taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music for decades. He was also a former professional boxer and was friends with the late Muhammad Ali and Ali’s brother Rochman Ali.

Ragin-Alamin is a former Dean of Students at the University of Chicago School of Medicine.

She says the mission of the Chicago International Salsa Congress is to “keep history alive, keep generations connected, and empower people to feel their best.”

The Salsa Congress is also committed to introducing their music to new generations who want to hear different rhythms and styles of Latin music.
