Jacksonville, Florida (WFLA) — A man with a large ax was shot by police Friday after he allegedly tried to break into a Florida elementary school.

Duval County School Superintendent Diana Green said the man tried to enter Ruth Upson Elementary School through two different doors. First Coast News reportedThe school was then closed.

A school security assistant followed the man off campus to a nearby church, where Duval County Schools police officers confronted him. Police ordered the man to drop the ax, but he refused and was shot by the officer.

Police later identified the man as 37-year-old David Hurley. According to First Coast NewsHe remained hospitalized on Saturday in critical condition.

Hurley has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, trespassing on school grounds with a firearm or other weapon, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, first responder or security guard. It is
