Cancun-Narissa Smith, Mexico added 19 points and 15 rebounds, Jordan Lewis added 15 points with 6 assists, and Baylor No. 6 gathered in the second half to defeat Fordham 68-45 in the Cancun Challenge on Thursday.
Baylor scored only 6 points in the second quarter, scoring 3 out of 13 points from the field and scoring 24-20 in halftime. However, the Bears responded 24 points in the third quarter, building a 44-34 lead, 4-7 from the 3-point range. Baylor also scored 24 points in the fourth round, recording 9 out of 15 shots and finishing the second half with 54.8% of the shots from 29.6 in the first half.
Sarah Andrews and Jamie Asbury each scored 10 points at Baylor (4-1). Smith, eight out of 16 from the field, won four consecutive double-doubles of the season. Queen Egubo was 9-0 from the field, but grabbed eight boards.
Baylor escaped a 79-76 defeat to Third Maryland, where Smith tied her career best with 30 points to go with 15 rebounds. It marked the third 30/15 performance of her career.
Kendell Helemia scored all 14 points in the first half at Fordham (3-2). She apparently suffered a knee injury and left the game, leaving a fourth at 8:20. Anna Dewolf had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Both teams will play again on Friday, with Baylor playing Arizona and Fordham playing Houston.
