Pitcher reportedly agreed to deal with Cubs

CHICAGO – The former American League Rookie of the Year will begin a new chapter in his career on the north side of Chicago in 2023.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, The Cubs have signed free agent pitcher Michael Fulmer. Terms of the deal have not been announced and the team has yet to confirm a move.

This comes less than a week after pitchers and catchers report to Mesa for spring training on February 15th.

An early career starter, Fulmer has pitched outside the bullpen for most of the past two seasons, spending the 2022 campaign with the Tigers and Twins. He made 41 appearances for Detroit in 20 walks with 39 strikeouts and a 3.20 ERA before being traded to Minnesota on August 2.

With the Twins, he recorded a 3.70 ERA and 22 strikeouts compared to eight walks in 26 appearances.

It was Fulmer’s first time pitching at the major league level outside of the Tigers, and he made a great debut in 2016. Full-time starter Fulmer then won his league with the Americans in Detroit where he went 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA. Received the Rookie of the Year award. In 2017, he was named an All-Star with a 3.83 ERA and a career record of 10-12.

Fulmer stalled in 2018 with a 3-12 record and a 4.69 ERA before undergoing Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2019, which cost him an entire season.

He started in 10 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, posting an 8.78 ERA in 27.2 innings for the Tigers. Fulmer moved primarily to the bullpen in 2021, making 48 of his 52 appearances as a reliever.

He found success in the role, striking out 73 batters and recording a 2.97 ERA on 14 saves compared to 20 walks with the Tigers.
