Suspect shoots two hostages, California cop, officials say

A CHP officer was shot near Wood Creek High School and a local park in Roseville around 12:30 p.m., according to Roseville Police Lieutenant Kelby Newton.

Police said the suspect began firing at responding officers as they fled the scene. That’s when the suspect took two hostages, officials said.

According to Newton, both hostages were hit by the suspect’s gunfire, one of whom died.

The nearby Wood Creek High School, Riley Library and Mahanee Athletic Center were shut down during the shootout, RPD said. At the time of filming, a computer-his coding camp for children was taking place at the Riley Library, which was scheduled to end in about an hour and a half.

An eyewitness who spoke to Nexstar’s KTXL said, “He was on the pitcher’s mound in Field 1 when he saw a crowd going by. And when he turned around, it was seven police officers with guns. A young man in his twenties was walking quickly with his dog, and the dog was yelling at him to get off. he turned around. I think he saw a gun flash. And the cop opened up to him. It was very scary for these children. Bullets were flying. ”

Law enforcement resources came from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Lincoln Police Department, Rocklin Police Department, Placer County Sheriff’s Department, and the Roseville Fire Department.

The suspect was taken into custody at 1:35 p.m., and no students or staff were involved or injured, according to the district.

At 3:00 p.m., the Roseville Police Department announced that all Mahaney Park facilities had been lifted from lockdown, with the fitness center and library closed for the day.
