14 children, 1 teacher killed in a Texas elementary school shootout, and the shooter dead – Chicago Tribune

Uvarde, Texas — A shooting at an elementary school in Texas killed 14 children and a teacher on Tuesday, killing an 18-year-old shooter.

Governor Greg Abbott said a local man fired at Rob Elementary School in Uvalde, about 85 miles west of San Antonio. This was the deadliest school shooting in Texas history, four years after a shooter shot and killed 10 people at Santa Fe High School in the Houston area.

“He shot and killed 14 students and teachers horribly and incomprehensible,” the governor said, adding that two officers were shot and injured, but were expected to survive.

According to Mr. Abbott, the shooter was a resident of the community, enrolled in school with a pistol and perhaps a rifle, and fired. He said the shooter was likely killed by the corresponding officer, but the case is still under investigation. Pete Aledondo, chief of the Ubaldi Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, said at a news conference that the shooter acted alone.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in addition to the dead, but Arredondo said there were “several injured.” Earlier, the Uvalde Memorial Hospital stated that 13 children were taken there. Another hospital reported that a 66-year-old woman was in a serious condition.

With just under 600 students at Robb Elementary School, Arredondo states that it serves second, third and fourth grade students. He didn’t say what grade the children were shot.

Heavy police surrounded the school on Tuesday afternoon, police in heavy vests diverted traffic, and FBI agents entered and exited the building.

White House spokesman Karine Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden would continue to be informed and up-to-date about school shootings at Air Force One when he returned from a five-day day trip. .. Jean-Pierre said Biden would make a statement at the White House on Tuesday night.

The shooting in Texas took place less than two weeks after a shooter fired at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 black shoppers and workers that authorities described as hate crimes.

About 16,000 people live in Yuvarde and it is the seat of government of Yuvarde County. The town is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) from the Mexican border. Rob Elementary has most of the understated homes in a residential area. There is a funeral hall opposite the school.
